12th of June 2016 Blog update

It’s been one busy week here in Dublin for me. But finally by the weekend I actually had a few days to take it bit easier. During the week we played another live show with Liberty Hell, and the set is coming together really well. We have quite few more shows coming up here in Dublin, and our website will be up soon with all of the dates.

But this week has had a few interesting lessons as well:

  1. I had help with this weeks vlog update video, and I was made to realise that sometimes shorter is better 🙂
  2. It ain’t always fun, but I work well under pressure.
  3. Self set deadline is a key to productive creativity

This week’s song “School of life” was made under a quite a lot of pressure due to my crazy busy schedule. But I am very happy with the results. Check it out here:

School of life

On my way to enjoy a healthy breakfast from Chopped, I got asked a few funny questions:

Vlog 204 Milk float or an ice-cream van?

In the Tuesday vlog I play for you guys a nearly 100 years old guitar:

Vlog 205 Playing a nearly hundred year old guitar!

In Wednesday’s vlog we take you along to the Dublin Port River fest. It was a fun day out:

Vlog 206 Dublin Port River fest

It was time for another rehearsal day before our Liberty Hell show this week. But there were few distraction getting on the way 😉

Vlog 207 Train on fire!

In the Friday’s vlog I talk about this week’s song “School of life” more in detail. I also share with you my basic guitar maintenance routine:

Vlog 208 Guitar maintenance

And last but not least, we have some music from the Liberty Hell’s show:

Vlog 209 Liberty Hell Live

And that is a wrap for the week.

5th of June 2016 Blog update

It has been a glorious week here in Dublin. We had our first official Liberty Hell gig on Friday night, and the preparations for that kept me busy. It was a great night and a great start to a journey, which I hope will continue years to come.

We also hit our first real milestone on my YouTube channel by reaching the first 1000 subscribers 🙂 That really did put a smile on my face. And also the 200th vlog got posted. I think next week is going to have a lot to live up to 😀

Now here’s a few lessons from this week:

  1. I got once again reminded that patience and persistence does always lead to results. There are no substitute for doing the work.
  2. Peoples perception of success is very different. To me the first step to success is doing what I love. It turns out many people don’t see it that way 😀
  3. Ask better questions and you will get better answers.

And now on to this weeks stuff. This weeks song is called “Blue” and you can check the song on my website, where you also find a link to my Bandcamp page. And form there you can download it for free 🙂

Blue

In the first vlog of the week, we adventure out into the Balckrock market hoping to get some nice fish and chips. We also have some crazy people jumping in the River Liffey:

Vlog 197 I would not swim in the Liffey!

When the sun comes out in Dublin, you got to get out and enjoy it. I also show you one secret sunny roofgarden that is great for a sneaky glass of wine:

Vlog 198 Sunny summers day in Dublin

In the vlog 199 we celebrate the first 1000 subscribers! And I can only say massive thank you from the bottom of my heart:

Vlog 199 1000 subscribers!

And just to top it all off we also celebrate the 200th vlog. I do think it is a good proof that both of these achievements go hand in hand. Hard work will give you results 🙂

Vlog 200 I’ll drink to that!

In the Friday vlog I talk about this weeks song in more detail. Check it out here:

Vlog 201 Emergency mission

And we finish this weeks vlogs by catching up with some friends. Oh yeah, and a sneaky Instagram mission:

Vlog 202 Catching up with friends

And that wraps up this sunny week in Dublin. Hope you guys are doing well, where ever you are and what ever you are up to.

8th of May 2016 Blog update

And the first week of May just flew by. It was a great week. I had a slow start to this weeks vlogs due to the bank holiday we had here in Ireland last Monday, but boy did I make up for it in the rest of the weeks vlogs 🙂

This week did bring forth some valuable lessons as well, so let’s get straight into it.

  1. Little bit of effort goes a long way. I have been recording the rehearsals and by making the effort to set up few extra microphones has given us some nice results. It does take a little bit of work in the beginning of the rehearsals, but it has been well worth it.
  2. Great running shoes can be hard to come by, but when you find them, they are worth their weight in gold.
  3. The last one is a bit of a vlogging lesson. Always film more rather than less.

This weeks song is all about the relationship between and artist and the audience in a live music setting. The song is available to download from my Bandcamp page right now and you can find the link and read all about it here:

Tonight’s the night

As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, the start to the week was slow. In this vlog I take you to the St. Stephen’s green for a wonder, as apart from my gig, not much more happened in my day 🙂

Vlog 169 Random Sunday

Again the Monday was a bank holiday here in Ireland and for most part of the day we spent shopping and watching movies. But Brian (the barman, not the banjo player) shares his thoughts on how we should make folk music more sexy:

Vlog 170 Making folk music sexy

This weeks studio vlog is a deep one. I share a lot of insight about file management, editing vocals and I show you some of my vocal recording process:

Vlog 171 Digging deep

During the week I modified the classic Boss DS-1 for Brian (the banjo man). In this vlog I walk you through the modification and give you a before and after comparison:

Vlog 172 Boss DS-1 mod

As usually is the case, in the Friday’s vlog I talk about this weeks song in more detail. But I also show you my new running shoes and share some music from our sessions during the week:

Vlog 173 Thank you in Finnish

Last but not least in the Saturday vlog I bring you along to our rehearsals, where you get to hear us working on some new music, as well as performing a live version of “It ain’t easy”, we take you along to the Music maker and finish the day in the Porterhouse for a few drinks and some nice food:

Vlog 174 It’s her first time

So that wraps up another action packed week. Next week should be good. I have my birthday coming up, so that can take the vlogs in many ways, lets hope for the best 😉

Before I let you go, just a small bit of house keeping. If you enjoy what I do and would like to support me, please consider pledging on my Patreon page. 24th of April 2016 Blog update

Once in a blue moon you get one of those weeks when you feel like you have really accomplished something great. That is the only way I can describe this week, even though the results really remains to be seen. But I got a good feeling about this one 😉

So week like this, surely there might be some great lessons in store. So let’s get straight into it:

  1. Good planning followed by quick action often gets the best results.
  2. Your gut usually knows the best, just follow it.
  3. All that good planning means nothing without action 😉

And then straight on to this weeks new song. In this weeks song I express my worries about the state of the world and what we are going to pass on to the future generations. Don’t forget to grab a download copy from my Bandcamp page as well:

Impossible

If you are going to watch one vlog this week, this is it! This was us rocking the Porterhouse last Saturday night. We got booked for quite few extra dates after this show, which I will share with you guys next week 🙂

Vlog 155 Rocking night in The Porterhouse

And on Tuesdays vlog I reflect on the show we had, and why it still puts a smile on my face:

Vlog 156 Thinking back to Saturday makes me smile

Wednesdays are studio days, and in this weeks studio vlog I get very deep into this weeks songs production:

Vlog 157 My head is melting

Here’s a vlog that did not pick as much love during the first week, but I am hoping you check it out as I love this almost a secret park in Dublin:

Vlog 158 Iveagh Gardens

In Friday’s vlog I talk about this weeks song. But I also share some banter from me and Brian’s extempore night out:

Vlog 159 This will never reach the interweb

And we finish the week with some fun stuff from this weeks rehearsals:

Vlog 160 Des has five drum kits!

So there we go, that wraps up an exiting week 🙂 Hope you enjoyed through the vlogs this weeks journey.

17th of April 2016 Blog update

As I write this weeks vlog/blog update while enjoying my morning coffee, I do feel the spring is in the air 🙂 Oh boy it did take it’s time this year… It’s been busy and a productive week for me, hope your week has been a good one as well. I somehow feel like I got to create a lot this week, and those of you who know me, know is my passion 🙂

This week did hold a few lessons as well, so lets dig in to them first:

  1. The time is never perfect, so you should never wait for it. Act today, not some day in the future. What you don’t do today, more than likely never gets done.
  2. Some interesting statistics was brought to my attention. As you know I have been working hard on my YouTube channel, but I must admit I was surprised to hear that YouTube is the most popular way for people to consume music these days. If your music is not on YouTube, it does not exist!
  3. Don’t just do a job, but over over deliver where ever you can.

This weeks song talks about taking responsibility for your own words. Read all about it in the blog post, and grab your self a download of the song from my Bandcamp page, the link is in the blog post as well:

Call Me

Last weekend we did a day trip to Bray and  cliff walk beside the sea on the way to Greystones. Check it out here:

Vlog 148 Day trip to Bray

I had been slacking with my diet a bit, and it was time to get back on track. I am actually trying to find a balance with it. This is a mixture of strict days and treat days. But Check out the details here:

Vlog 149 Rainy day diet talk

In this weeks studio day vlog I talk about production and dynamics. Check it out here:

Vlog 150 Studio day

It had been a while since the had music from the session in the Porterhouse, so I decided to capture the two banjo’s in action. Brian and Dave are delivering a real treat for a banjo players here:

Vlog 151 Double Banjo’s

I decided to start including a little section on Friday’s vlogs talking about the weekly new song. Here is the first one:

Vlog 152 New song day

This week I got to play a pretty cool show in the Porterhouse with Des and Brian. Here is a some snippets from the rehearsals for the show:

Vlog 153 Rehearsals

That’s the vlogs and the song. On top of that I finally managed to get some long overdue lyric videos out this week, and there are many more on the way. I am hoping to eventually have most of my music up on YouTube, which is a bit of a task by now, but lets see what we can do 🙂 Check out the playlist for the lyric videos HERE.

Before I head out to enjoy some of that Irish spring weather, I just waned to once again say thank you. Thank you for listening and downloading my music, thank you for watching my vlogs. You guys keep me going 🙂

10th of April 2016 Blog update

I really don’t want to sound like a broken record, but what’s with the weather! We were out on a cliff walk and for the most of that three-hour walk we were pounded by hailstones the size of pearls… It’s like someone forgot to tell the mother nature that the spring is long overdue. But that’s enough of that, rant over 😉

Never the less, it has been a good week. The sessions in The Porterhouse have been very busy. This weeks song kept me busy for few days, but the results were well worth it. And the vlogs kept me busy 🙂

  1. Chin-ups are a one tough workout! I’m finding doing them regularly through out the day gets your metabolism really fired up. I have my chin-up bar on my bathroom door, so every time I am in and out of the bathroom I hop on it 🙂 No excuses.
  2. As a musician it can be easy to get caught on very limited styles of music. But if you are willing to expand your musical pallet, you might just open some unexpected doors.
  3. Trust your gut your gut knows the best…

This weeks song was a one that I ended up being very exited about. And the message in the song it self is something I hope many of you will think about hard. Read all about it here:

Let go

In the first vlog of the week I talk about the different processes of vlogging and how you sometimes just need to go with the flow:

Vlog 141 Fingers crossed

In Tuesdays vlog I once again talk about Songwriting. In this one we get pretty deep talking about the creative process:

Vlog 142 Songwriters self-doubt

The Sliotar summer tour is getting close, but there is still a lot of work to be done. I was stuck in “the office” mode for a few days this week, so I thought it would be a good idea to talk about a little bit about tour booking:

Vlog 143 Tour booking

Brian has been a regular feature on the vlogs, but this time he took over the vlog for a bit, and almost dropped the camera:

Vlog 144 Brian vlog takeover

Friday’s vlog was another random vlog, as the crazy weather had me stuck in the house:

Vlog 145 What’s with the weather?

The last vlog of the week Brian was with me again. We went for a lunch and Brian even introduced us to a small bit of Irish history:

Vlog 146 It’s good to have good friends

And that’s all for now folks, a lot more stuff on the way next week 🙂

This week you guys have sent a lot of love my way. The feedback on this weeks song really meant a world to me. And for all of that I would like to say big thank you. I hope through  my work and this community we are building I can return some of that love back to you guys. Have a great week, where ever you are.

3rd of April 2016 Blog update

It has been a good week. I had time to concentrate on what I love the most, which is creating things, music, videos, photographs… I really truly love it and live for it. But to make the time to concentrate enough time on the restive process, it does take a lot of work managing my time. I’d like to think I am getting better at it 😉

This week I definitely learned a lot, but its hard to break the into specifics, but lets try to round them up in a more general way:

  1. I have been doing my homework on stuff like parallel compression and other vocal mixing tricks of the pro producers of more modern music. And I think you can hear some of the results in this weeks song as well.
  2. Time management is all about valuing your time and figuring out what you are better doing your self, and what you can allocate to others (or outsource)
  3. If you find a bug in a software or a system, don’t just assume others have found it as well. You might just be the first one making the people responsible aware of it.

And that leads straight to this weeks stuff. This weeks song “Loving You” is a song about the emotional rollercoaster in relation ships and making-up. Check it out here:

Loving You

In the first vlog of the week I talk about one of the common problems of vloggers:

Vlog 134 Another full hard drive

This is a special one for me. It’s me, Des and Brian rocking it out in the Porterhouse. Check it out and share it far and wide, it really would mean a world to me:

Here’s something completely different, Steam tractors and a band organ:

Vlog 136 Things are getting steamy

This is a random vlog. Random vlogs are the ones that are just about my day:

Vlog 137 Random Tuesday

I had a day of getting stuff done. So I decided to dedicate the whole vlog to productivity:

Vlog 138 Simple productivity hack

The last vlog of the week is about Instagram, and how I male it more fun for my self. The idea is useful one for pretty much any social media. Check it out:

Vlog 139 Gamifying Instagram

And that wraps the week once again. But before I let you get on with your day, just a little bit of house keeping.

27th of March 2016 Blog update

So as soon as we managed to wash off the green face paint after St. Patrick’s day, the easter is here. This week my long stint of shows and sessions came to and end and I got few days of rest 🙂 Now I am back to my normal schedule, apart from the easter celebrations, which are quite special here in Ireland this year.

This year is 100 years from the Easter rising that took place here in Dublin 1916 and was a start of a series of an events that lead to Ireland getting its independence. So Dublin is going to be mad this Sunday and Monday. But Hopefully the weather allows me to get out and vlog about it for yo guys.

But before all that, let’s have look at what I got up to during the week just gone. And lets start with few lessons:

  1. This weeks song did require quite a lot of effort in the studio and I learned that by expanding to a different styles of production you actually get to learn much more than by sticking to what we know.
  2. Persistency always works better than trying to find a shortcut. This is a lesson I seem to be coming back all the time 😉
  3.  Sometimes it is better to recover and let your body heal, than push yourself.

And then on to this weeks posts. This weeks song “Blood on my hands” was a last part to a trilogy of songs. Read all about it here:

Blood on my hands

In the first vlog of the week I take you around the food market in the Temple Bar Meeting house square:

Vlog 127 Temple Bar food market

From time to time I try to share something to of my ordinary vlogging stuff. In this vlog I share with you my Breakfast of champions:

Vlog 128 Breakfast of champions

This week’s song was a last part of a trilogy of songs, and in this vlog I star recording the song:

Vlog 129 Working on a trilogy

On Tuesday morning we woke up to the news about the horrendous attacks in Brussels. In this vlog I share with you my first reactions to the attacks:

Vlog 130 The morning of Brussels attacks

After nearly two weeks of working flat-out my body finally told me to get some sleep. I also struggled with a small knee injury:

Vlog 131 Slow start and a busted knee

Finally on Saturday’s vlog I thought it was time to bring some live music to you guys. I performed an acoustic versions of the three songs that made up the trilogy:

Vlog 132 Trilogy live

So even that the craziness of St. Patricks week was behind us, still we had a busy week of vlogs. Let me know what you thought of the week. Also let me know if there is anything you’d like to see me cover in the vlogs.

If you enjoy what I do and would like to support me, please consider pledging on my Patreon page. And thats a wrap for the week. Hope you have a great start to the week and I will talk to you soon.

20th of March 2016 Blog update

The St. Patrick’s week is coming to an end and I am still standing 😉 Although I am starting to feel the workload, seems like just one night sleep just doesn’t seem to be enough to recover 😀 But soon enough I have few days off.

It has been a great St. Patrick’s festival. The atmosphere all around the city has been just wonderful. We had some great shows in The Porterhouse with Sliotar.

This weeks lessons were more of an observations:

1. Well planned crowd control is the key to good and enjoyable festival.

2. Emotional drain can be at least as draining as physical.

3. Sometimes just rolling with it is the smartest thing you can do.

And now on to this weeks stuff. This week song “Baby” was a love song with a twist. As always, you can download it from Bandcamp right now. Check out the song here:

Baby

Dublin has a reputation of being grey, and I do admit the clouds tend to cover the sky quite often here. But when the sun does come out, this city makes the best of it. Check out how beautiful the city looked in this golden sunset:

Vlog 120 Golden sunset over Dublin

The good people at the Hot and Muggy drinks sent me to some Organo Gold coffee to try out, so it was time for another coffee review:

Vlog 121 Organo Gold coffee review

After of few week of moving house, it was time to give the vlogs a bit of a twist. And the Six Nations Rugby match between Ireland and Italy at the Aviva stadium here is Dublin was a perfect chance:

Vlog 122 Six Nations

Even through all the festivities, it was time to record this weeks song. This time I tried to walk you through some of my process of recording:

Vlog 123 Recording “Baby”

This week there is a lot of The Porterhouse in these vlogs, and in this one I explain the reason behind it:

Vlog 124 Stuck in The Porterhouse

And the last vlog of the week in a way is the jewel of the week 🙂 It is the St.Patrick’s day vlog, in which I take you along to the streets of Dublin, to see the parade and to the Porterhouse for the Sliotar St. Pats show:

Vlog 125 St. Patrick’s day 2016

So that wraps up one busy week of festivities. Hope you had a great week.

13th of March Blog update

It’s been a while since I sat down to write this weekly blog/ vlog update and I wasn’t exhausted or rushing 😀 The move finally is starting to be behind us and the new place is starting to look nice, and in a strange way feel more like home than the old place did. Also I actually had more time to do all my creative work this week, and the results have been something I am looking quite proudly back on right now 🙂

But before we go any further, check out the new intro I did for the weekly blog update video and let me know what you think of it.

This week the lessons were most certainly harder to pick up on, as well… things were going much smoother. But there still were few lessons along the week.

  1. To be organised requires discipline, but the rewards are worth it.
  2. If a website claims to make a task easier and fails, the chances of me using it are slim. Lesson to keep in mind while working on my new website.
  3. Being a little bit ahead of the game, hugely lowers my stress levels 🙂

This week was definitely a productive week, an I am sure it comes across in this weeks vlogs 🙂 But first thing first this weeks song “Last night,” which you can download HERE, is up on my website. It talks about the importance of keeping a positive outlook in life. Check it out:

Last night

During last weekend we celebrated Des’s birthday and I spent most of the weekend building flat pack furniture:

Vlog 113 Happy birthday Des

With the new week I was delighted to be back writing music. I used the opportunity to talk about the importance of your surroundings, when it comes to songwriting:

Vlog 114 On songwriting part 2

As the moving house part was sorted, it was time to start setting up my new studio 🙂

Vlog 115 Studio setup part 1

And the setup took me long enough to spread it over two vlogs. Check out the last of it here:

Vlog 116 Studio setup part 2

In this vlog I have the studio functioning and I set out to record this weeks song “Last night.”

Vlog 117 First recording in the new studio

And as I was a little bit ahead of my vlogging schedule, I thought it would be only fare to explain to you guys how it all works at the moment:

Vlog 118 Clearing up the confusion

And there you go, another productive week in the bag 🙂 Have you enjoyed the vlogs and the music?
