I am extremely lucky to have had a chance to play with some fantastic musicians over the years, I still do almost everyday. But to choose who you work with can be a tricky business. Artists often are volatile people. They dig deep to express publicly things most people can’t. This comes with a price and over the years I have worked with some quite challenging personalities.
Obviously when choosing who you work with, the music needs to come first. Sometimes you can play with your best friends, who are talented musicians, but still it might not sound right. And sometimes you might play great music with people who are extremely difficult to get on with. So choose carefully.
But also keep in mind that your fellow musicians might be in the same position. Be considered, help others, let them have room musically and personally as much as you would like to have. Always deliver when it comes to music and be a nice person to be around and you will have much better chance to succeed.
